James Malone KS2 Lead Teacher and Fiona Maxwell KS1 Lead Teacher
Welcome to the English subject area of the school website. Both of us are extremely passionate and enthusiastic about all aspects of the English curriculum. At Etchells, we believe that reading is an integral life skill and because of this we have placed reading and books at the heart of our child initiated curriculum by introducing a text based approach throughout the school. We carefully select high quality texts that are rich in content; we believe it is important that the children have read these books before they depart for the next stage in their learning at secondary school. We also have a range of incentives to encourage the children with their daily reading.
With the children’s writing, we utilise an approach based upon ‘Talk for writing’. Through this approach we are able to use high quality models of writing which include a range of narrative techniques that the children can then recreate in their own writing. Furthermore, we also place a huge emphasis on the importance of appropriate spelling, punctuation and grammar.
At Etchells we have extremely high expectations regarding the presentation of children’s work. Upon joining the school, the children will be taught how to write in a cursive style. When the high standards that we inisist upon at Etchells have been met, the children are rewarded with their pen licence. Children at the school take real pride in the presentation of their work in all subjects.
Phonics is taught in ability groups. We follow Letters and Sounds and use the Jolly Phonics scheme to aid with resources. Our pupils at the very early stages of phonic development are encouraged to use the Jolly Phonic action to aid phoneme, grapheme recall. Phonic sessions are fun, pacey and hands on. A range of resources are used, such as games, white boards, large graphemes, and i Pads.
We are currently reviewing all policies and age-related expectations and will be publishing updates throughout the school year.
