Welcome to 5R's Class Page

Our Year 5 team includes:

Curriculum:

This term we will begin our topic “Half the World Away” which is a Science and Geography based topic. Throughout the term, the children will be learning about Earth and Space, including looking at the movement of the Earth and other planets relative to the Sun, investigating why we have night and day, and understanding time zones. We will also be focusing on North America, researching famous landmarks and locating them on the map as well as distinguishing between human and physical features.

Throughout the term, children will have a range of opportunities to focus on our 6 core values: enjoyment, creativity, challenge, independence, resilience and aspiration so they can deepen their learning experience throughout our creative curriculum. This will also be evident in the children's Knowledge Organisers. 

Etchells' creative curriculum will allow the children to investigate and explore a huge wealth of knowledge and skills in a variety of different ways and we will communicate our learning to peers and parents at the end of each topic. Keep your eyes peeled for information on our first communication opportunity! 

English:

This term we will be continuing to study a range of genres to inspire the children's writing. We will begin by using a trailer from the film ‘The Martian’ to inspire a story about being stranded on a strange planet. Later, we will read an incredible and beautifully illustrated true story written by Chris Van Allsburg.

Maths:

During the first part of this year we will continue our work on multiplication and division, including short multiplication, long multiplication and using the bus stop method to divide 3 and 4 digit numbers by a 1 digit number. We will then move on to Area and Perimeter. We will also continue our weekly arithmetic tests. We are seeing improvement in the scores for all of the children and we have found it to be so beneficial for the children’s fluency skills.

P.E:

For the duration of Spring Term (and the first half of Summer Term) we will be swimming every Tuesday morning. This is the children's last year of swimming at Etchells. 
We will also be doing Tennis on Thursday afternoons.
