Science

Year 3 Science builds on learning from Key Stage 1. We start by investigating Rocks and Soils, comparing and grouping different kinds of rocks, looking at fossils and how they are formed and planning and conducting simple experiments.

As part of our Animals, including Humans unit, we consider the right types and amounts of nutrition for different animals and identify the role of skeletons and muscles for support, protection and movement.

We identify and describe the functions of different parts of flowering Plants, examine the requirements for life and growth and investigate the process of water transportation and pollination.

Later in the year, we investigate Light and Shadows, recognising that it is reflected, that we need it to see and that it can be dangerous.  We will also look at how shadows are formed and find patterns in the way that their size can change.

When exploring Forces and Magnets, we will look at pushes and pulls, compare how objects move on different surfaces and observe how magnets attract and repel each other. We will consider how magnets attract some materials and investigate the effect of their poles.

Throughout each topic we have a focus on working scientifically: setting up simple practical enquiries and fair tests, making observations and taking measurements , presenting data in a variety of ways, recording findings using simple scientific language, drawings, labelled diagrams, keys, bar charts, and tables and using results to draw simple conclusions.
