2W puppet design and making

Lesson: Design and technology

Class: 2W Year: 2020 - 2021

This half term the children have been developing their design skills and have used these to create a puppet for a person of their own choice. They began by evaluating the many hand puppets on the market and by identifying the aspects of each puppet that appealed to them. after this they created a template that included a 1cm seam to be pinned to a piece of fabric and cut around. They then used the sewing skills developed during out Christmas Stockings activity last term, to stitch the two sides of the puppet together. The next part was quite tricky. Thya had to add embelishments to their design and had to consider carefully the best method for attaching cloth, ribbon, pipecleaners and even buttons onto the cloth body of their own puppet.

After all of this creativity we had to put it to good use so the children recorded themselves doing a puppet show using green scrren technology and then we added in their chosen background. All in all a fantastic project and well supported by those at home too so I will upload your images too ASAP.

Finally the children evalualted their own wor and that of their peers, with the home learners feeding back to one another during one of our live meetings. The children had to decide what they would change if theyr were to do the activity again.

It was interesting to note that although two of the pupils struggled to fit their original puppets over their hands, they both persevered and made a second puppet to overcome this issue!
