History and Geography

We have a brand new topic in Year 5 this term: The Story of Stockport. We have been learning about our local area going as far back as medieval times when Stockport had a castle (sadly now a sports shop) and was granted a market charter from the King.

The children looked at the buildings in Stockport and how they have changed throughout history which led us on to making a street in time including St Mary's Church and Underbank Hall.

Our next leap in time takes us to the industrial revolution which gave us our mills and iconic viaduct before we finish looking at World War 2 (supported by an amazing trip to Stockport Museum and Air Raid Shelters).

Throughout this topic we have looked at maps of the local area as well as aerial images and photographs to learn about the geography of Stockport. We now know that the River Mersey begins under the town centre.

It has been a fantastic learning journey for us all ; who knew there was such a rich story of Stockport?
