Our Year 5 team includes:

Curriculum:

This term we will begin our topic ‘Rogues, Raiders, Invaders…?’ which is a historical and geographical study of the struggle for Britain during the Dark Ages (predominantly investigating the Anglo Saxons and Vikings as reluctant neighbours). This topic will be host to lots of practical historical enquiry, purposeful outdoor learning and exciting role-play so we can really experience the lives of people from the past.

Through immersive drama, we will explore the mystery of the empty Saxon grave, scrutinise primary and secondary sources and even search for evidence of the Dark Ages in our school grounds!

English:

This term we will begin with a focus on poetry and will be learning about The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. We will be deepening our understanding of different sentence structures that impact the reader as well as focusing on a range of grammatical terms.

Our teaching of reading will continue on a whole class basis; our main focus will move from retrieval and inference based questions to suggesting what impressions characters leave on the reader and finding evidence from the text to support our big 3 mark questions.

Maths:

We will be continuing to consolidate the Year 5 AREs with more of a reasoning focus compared to the arithmetic focus we have had so far this year. We will start by looking at decimals (adding, subtracting rounding) then converting between fractions, decimals and  percentages before moving onto looking at angles in different shapes and turns. We will then be going back to consolidate our learning on previous topics. You can help your child to make further progress by practising  telling the time (analogue and digital), reading timetables, practising times tables and using CGP books.

P.E:

Summer Term is a busy term for Sport! 

Summer 1        5RW = Swimming & MCFC coach
