World Book Day

Lesson: English

Class: 2W Year: 2019 - 2020

On World Book Day we were actually on our visit to Chester Zoo, where we all had the role of 'Habitat Specialists' charged with designing and building a new animal enclosure.

This is an ongoing activity that has already involved the children in reading a lovely book called 'Zoo' by author Anthony Browne. This book showed images of a very run down zoo with few elements to encourage the animals to feel they were in their own natural habitats. We then looked into our magic story box which contained a letter from one of the characters in the book, suggesting that the zoo needed to make improvements for both animals and visitors. This lead us to study different continents in specialist work groups and to identify animals that are endangered on each continent. The children then had to present their findings about habitats to one another and were able to 'bid' for a quantity of money they will use to design their own habitats in the next two weeks.

The day after book day we had a go at designing and painting our own book characters. Some of the children drew well known characters whilst others chose to make up their own.

As the animal topic continues I will add more images to show the work that the children are doing. Keep checking in!
