Foundations for PE in EYFS

In Nursery, our pupils first concentrate on developing a strong core and the fundamental movement skills through a variety of activities, games and exercises but indoors and outside.  Once ready the children then develop their fine motor skills through using a variety of one handed tools and equipment.  They have opportunities to use scissors and are encouraged to develop a comfortable grip when holding a pen and pencil.

During the Reception year the children develop the foundations of a handwriting style encouraging the tripod grip whenever possible.  They revise the fundamental movement skills they have already acquired.  Equipment is used in a more structured way to develop confidence, competence, precision and accuracy.  The work in EYFS helps to prepare the children for more competitive and cooperative physical activities in KS1 and helps the children to develop a positive attitude towards exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
