2W Victorian Day

Lesson: History

Class: 2W Year: 2023 - 2024

We had a wonderful Victorian Day, during which the children dressed in costumes and took on Victorian names. At the start of the school day they entered the building through different doors, boys going one way and girls going another. As they entered, they paid the teacher using either a penny or an apple, and they were only allowed in once hands were checked to see if they'd had a wash before school. The boys took part in a science lesson, while the girls did art, drawing a portrait of Queen Victoria.

During the morning the children had a go at Victorian cursive writing, using a slate and learnt their fives count by rote (repeating it over and over again). They also did a PT session outside, doing 'drill' or excercises completed altogether. In the classroom they learnt from a blackboard and no electricity was used. The children handled a number of strange and exciting Victorian artefacts and had the opportunity to try washing clothes, wrapping parcels of food using string and even cleaning out the chamber pot! SO many memories were made and a wonderful time was had by all - even the teachers enjoyed the rule of 'children should be seen and not heard!
